Overview

This is a step-by-step guide to a broad range of printing methods. Drawing skills and artistic training are not essential, and further techniques are described in detail such as paper blocks; linocuts and wood engravings; printing with or without a press; and advice on inks, papers, and equipment available to the modem printer. A selection of projects help to introduce the various methods available to the printer.

Walkin brings over 40 years of experience as a graphic designer to this competent if inspired manual. He describes a range of printmaking techniques, from the use of everyday objects like feathers, leaves, and fruit through paper blocks, linocuts, and wood engravings. The result in no way competes with John Ross and Clare Romano's The Complete Printmaker (Free Pr., 1991. rev. ed.), which covers the history and technique of intaglio, collograph, and lithograph and other professional methods. It does, however, teach the delights of simple printmaking and, as such, is suitable for general collections.
