New books on printmaking techniques are fairly uncommon, yet suddenly at least two good ones are on the market the other one is Julia Ayres's Printmaking Techniques , LJ 8/93. Plentifully illustrated and divided into numbered sequences in easy-to-understand paragraphs, Martin's encyclopedia is the better buy for concise, step-by step demonstrations. A beginning artist could take this all-color manual into the studio and follow the procedures visually or verbally. All methods are covered, from relief to lithography, but this isn't just a recipe book. Markmaking and printing processes are treated separately, though excellent cross references anticipate any questions that might arise. The only real drawback is that plate and offset lithography are emphasized over stone printing. Whereas this makes good long-term sense because of limited supplies of special limestone, most educational institutions still use it.
