Children's Literature
The fifteenth and sixteenth centuries mark a period of great development and upheaval. The Renaissance was a time of intellectual rebirth as artists, sculptors, writers and craftsmen in many fields made strides toward new pathways of expression. The seemingly dark cloak of ignorance that typified the Middle Ages gave way to a more scientific age. However, these advances were not welcomed by all agencies. Organized religions and powerful elites who ruled sometimes opposed discovery, as it threatened their control. In the 1500s religious divisions occurred that led to centuries of conflict. Religious wars merged with clashes of nations to create ample opportunities for bloodshed. Simultaneously, explorers were dispatched to the very ends of the world to seek out and recover riches. This tumultuous era is the subject of this broad-based book. In Renaissance and Discovery readers will be introduced to the artistic, cultural, religious and political events of that age. The author uses a concise text linked to a plethora of colorful illustrations to depict a time period fraught with change. As with other books in this series, this text provides a somewhat reasonable introduction to many subjects but little depth for any individual topic. Part of the "History of the World" series. 2002, McGraw-Hill, $18.95. Ages 10 to 12. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
