Children's Literature

The fifth book in the "History of the World" series centers upon the sharp clashes that marked so much of the period ranging from the American Revolution until World War One. That 250-year period was one of seemingly perpetual warfare or struggle. Revolutions in America, France, China and numerous other domains created both social change and devastation. Warfare from the Napoleonic age to the horrors of the Great War left tens of millions of people dead or dispossessed. Conversely, this time period also stood out as one when enormous industrial growth occurred. The Industrial Revolution created the opportunity for vastly improved productivity. This revolution also bore a human cost as men, women and children were uprooted from rural life to crowd into urban slums and work ungodly hours. Change in human history has generally been marked by upheaval, and this time period is representative of that fact. Since so much change occurred in that era it is difficult to see how any single slim book could do justice to it. That proves to be the case with this particular book. By trying to cover too large a subject readers are left with little substance. In addition, the editors have been somewhat careless with their facts and illustrative captions, some of which are inaccurate. 2002, McGraw-Hill, $18.95. Ages 10 to 12. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
