Overview

An evocative one-act tragedy set in the Aran Islands at the home of Maurya, who has lost her husband, father-in-law, and five of her six sons at sea. Her surviving son is preparing to sail to another town, and Maurya, fearing for his life, urges him not to go.

About the Author, J. M. Synge

John Millington Synge (1871Β–1909) was an Irish playwright, poet, and prose writer. As a young man, he set out to explore Germany, Italy, and France. W. B. Yeats discovered Synge in Paris and persuaded him to return to Ireland to write. He is the author of the plays Riders to the Sea and In the Shadow of the Glen, among many other works.
