Gr 6-9-- An adequate biography of one of the South's most revered figures. Aaseng covers Lee's difficult childhood, his early military career (during which he displayed none of his later brilliance), and his career as Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. Although this portrait is not always adulatory--as when Aaseng covers Lee's domineering relationship with his daughters--he does repeat many of the typical compliments of the general. A better biography for the same age level is Manfred Weidhorn's Robert E. Lee (Atheneum, 1988), which Aaseng includes in his recommended reading list. An average book that doesn't cover any new territory. --Elizabeth M. Reardon, McCallie School, Chattanooga, TN
