Gr 4-8-- While this import serves as an introduction to the life and times of FDR, the title is misleading in that less than half of the book deals with the war and the decidedly British slant may cause concern for American audiences. Cross begins with a brief but adequate description of Roosevelt's childhood, followed by his entry into politics, the Great Depression, and the New Deal. Only then does he examine Roosevelt's military leadership and decisions that led the U. S. into war and to eventual victory. Intended as an overview, the text is rather broad with only the basic necessary information about the president and his management of the war. Wide margins and colored maps of some of the various campaigns make the book attractive, while vintage photos and detailed captions add to the narrative. The text ends abruptly after Roosevelt's death and Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb. The cover features a photo of FDR superimposed over a 50-star flag. --Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary Sch . , KS
