Children's Literature
Rottweilers, part of the "All About Dogs" series from Capstone Press's Edge Books imprint, is designed to aid children in the process of selecting and caring for a new dog, as well as provide basic historical information about the breed. Beginning with the chapter entitled "The Robust Rottweiler" the book describes, through photos and scattered colorful paragraphs with icy blue backgrounds, what a Rottweiler looks like, how it acts, and details the ways it makes a good family pet for particular homes. Three chapters follow including "History of the Rottweiler," "Strong and Sturdy," and "Caring for a Rottweiler." "The Robust Rottweiler" chapter includes a subchapter entitled "Is the Rottweiler Right for You?" which describes the breed's size and temperament and the need for a great deal of exercise, training, and socialization. The "History of the Rottweiler" chapter details the breed's origins in Germany, as well as a callout term on selective breeding. An "Edge Fact" in the "Strong and Sturdy" chapter states that "when they are happy, some rottweilers make a purring sound." An eight-word glossary contains several words specifically related to the rottweiler, including dysplasia. The "Read More Internet Site" chapters offer opportunities for further study and research and may require assistance. A representative from the American Rottweiler Club was a consultant on the book's production. Reviewer: Debra Lampert-Rudman
