School Library Journal

Gr 5–9—This volume picks up immediately where book two left off, with Jonah, Katherine, and Andrea going to the time period when Andrea was kidnapped. She is Virginia Dare, the first English child to be born in the ill-fated Roanoke Colony. During their time journey, the Elucidator is lost, and the children arrive not certain as to where or when they are. Jonah pieces together that Andrea deliberately lost the Elucidator, and she admits she was following the directive of a mystery man who promised that she could stop her 21st-century parents from dying in a car crash if she did what he said. Unsure of what they've been sent back to do, the children decide to try to find the inhabitants of the colony. Along the way they save the life of Andrea's 16th-century grandfather, and she feels more and more that she is supposed to stay with him. Familiarity with the first two books is a must, and even then, this story is somewhat confusing. The integration of background material is not consistently clear, so unless readers have studied the history of the Roanoke Colony, they may not understand what is going on. This plodding novel is plot driven; there is little character development and there are no new hints as to Jonah's historical identity. Readers are told that the group will next go into the 17th century, but they may not have the patience to follow.—Cheri Dobbs, Detroit Country Day Middle School, Beverly Hills, MI

Editorials

From Barnes & Noble

To repair the damage of time kidnapping, Jonah and Katherine are helping Virginia Dare return to her 17th century birthplace in the American colonies. Unfortunately, Roanoke has been abandoned and, without communication devices, our young time-travelers don't quite know what to do! The third Missing installment is a charm.

From the Publisher

"Haddix concentrates more on the action, suspense and mystery in this book...Best of the series so far."β€”Kirkus Reviews

"Haddix skillfully weaves her story around a popular historical mystery (the Roanoke Colony), and the result will please returning readers of the Missing series; new ones can also plunge right in."β€”Booklist

Children's Literature - Danielle Williams

Children have been stolen from throughout history and brought into the future to be adopted by couples in the 20th century. The only way to save history, and make sure the proper timeline is maintained, is to return the stolen children to their proper place. Book three of the Missing series begins with Jonah and Katherine in the control room, waiting for J.D. to send them on their next mission with Andrea, who is actually Virginia Dare, the first European child born in North America. It is Jonah's and Katherine's responsibility to make sure Andrea is returned to her proper time and joins with her tracer in order to ensure the timeline is maintained. While the depth of history contained within this volume is fascinating, the third book of the series resolves nothing and only creates more questions as to what the conclusion of the series will lead to. While it is possible to read this installment without reading previous books in the series, not every aspect of time travel or the reason behind returning the stolen children is adequately explained, the result of which is confusing passages interspersed with gripping adventure and a fierce desire to know what comes next. It is recommended that readers begin with the first book of the "Missing" series, Found. Reviewer: Danielle Williams
