Children's Literature
Grass Maiden, the Shoshone Indian known as Sacagawea, hears tales of bravery and hunting from the boys in her tribe. She longs for the chance to be brave someday. This opportunity comes when Grass Maiden and her grandmother are collecting wood for the fire. A boulder rolling down the hillside knocks a tree onto her grandmother, causing her ankle to break. All of a sudden, a rattlesnake appears, threatening to strike the fallen woman. Grass Maiden must act quickly; she grabs her knife and kills the snake, saving her grandmother's life. Then she helps the injured woman all the way back to their tipi. The lively illustrations provide color and drama to the excellent text, which is based on events in Sacagawea's life. Sacagawea is the Indian woman who accompanied Lewis and Clark on their journey across the Louisiana Purchase. This title is one in the publisher's "Ready-To-Read" series. It also is part of a series featuring the "Childhood of Famous Americans." 2002, Aladdin Paperbacks/Simon & Schuster, Pettenati <%ISBN%>0689851456
