Description: This book covers safety issues in the operating room, including communication, patient-associated risks, operating room-associated risk, and surgery-related risk.
Purpose: The purpose is to discuss how incidents or events can be prevented. This is critical, with safety of such great concern to all those in the healthcare environment, patients, and their families.
Audience: According to the author, the book is written for nurses, surgical technologists, surgeons, and anesthesiologists. The audience includes anyone concerned about client safety. The book can be, and is, used to insure that the organization meets Joint Commission accreditation standards.
Features: Each chapter begins with a case study of an actual or imaginary situation. The authors then discuss how the situation could be prevented with the right steps in place. Tables include sidebars related to the event and examples of checklists. Tips related to the event provide extra information. Two appendixes address environment of care risks in the operating room and maintaining a drug-free workplace.
Assessment: This book provides material essential for patient safety in the operating room. The information is well written and clearly presented. I strongly recommend this book to all healthcare providers who are employed in a perioperative and/or operative environment.
