Overview

What do orange juice, buttermilk, honey, and nutmeg have in common? They're all ingredients in Ginger Carrot Soup, a deeply flavorful zinger of a recipe created to chase the winter chills away. Are you in the mood for tenderloin pork? Try a steaming bowl of charming Thai Pork Stew seasoned to perfection. Not sure what to make for dinner? You probably have everything you need for Pasta e Fagioli in your cupboard.

These soul-satisfying soups and stews are just three of the more than 70 dreamy dishes in this winning volume from Rodale's New Classics series. At first glance, some appear to be "old favorites," but all have a delightful new twist in flavor. Author Anne Egan makes a big-city splash with Manhattan Clam Chowder by pumping up the usual tomato-clam mix with bacon and hot-pepper sauce. Apricots, cinnamon, and curry intermingle in captivating yet easy Moroccan Lamb Stew, and fresh dill adds pizzazz to quick-cooking Split Pea Soup. When time is of the essence, serve the essence of Provence, Bouillabaisse with Herbed Toast, in just 25 minutes! (The secret is in the canned tomatoes and clam juice.) Relax and put your feet up while Beef Burgundy simmers on the stove.

With more than 30 color photographs and accessible chapter headings like Best-Ever Bean Soups and Favorite Fish Stews, you'll find what you want when you want it. From stick-to-your-bones stews and aristocratic soups like White Bean and Carrot Soup to the best New England Clam Chowder and hearty Beef and Black Bean Chili, Savory Soups and Stews will satisfy even the most discriminating palate any night of the week. And you won't have to stand in front of the stove all day, either!

In keeping withthe Rodale's New Classics approach to cooking, Savory Soups and Stews emphasizes ease and simplicity, tantalizing flavors, and adventuresome fun for the whole family. Stop searching your cookbook shelf--all the soup and stew recipes that you'll ever need are right here.

Each of these books, the first two titles in a new series, includes easy, mostly quick recipes for old favorites. Cookies, Brownies, Muffins, and More offers, for example, Chocolate Chunk Cookies and Gingersnaps, a variety of brownies and a few blondies, Blueberry Muffins, and Carrot Cake and Gingerbread. Egan's soups and stews are a bit less traditional, ranging from Creole Catfish Chowder to Santa Fe Seafood Stew, along with more traditional choices. Savory Soups and Stews is a useful collection for busy family cooks and is recommended for most libraries. Recipes for most of the baked goods in Cookies, Brownies, can readily be found in other books, although some cooks may find it a handy roundup; for larger baking collections.
