VOYA

This volume, which covers slightly more than one hundred sports, is the "children's version" of the "adult" title, Sports: The Complete Visual Reference (Firefly, 2000). Sections on the human body, sports and the human body, and the Olympic games precede entries explaining the sports. Ranging from one to four pages in length are explanations of the rules, how a sport is played or performed, and what equipment is involved. Track and field, nautical, equestrian, ball, and combat sports are just a few of the categories. All of the usual sports in the United States are found, as well as some not so usual, such as curling, cricket, and rugby. An abundance of computer-generated color graphics, particularly sequential shots of the participants, aid in illustrating how a move is done, including golf swings, swimming dives, and horsejumping. Although marketed for children, this reference tool could be useful for preteens and young teens, and for those who prefer a visual, abbreviated approach with less text. The information, although concise, is adequate. The price difference makes the adult version a better buy, as it covers more sports and offers expanded information. Glossary. Index. Illus. 2003, Scholastic, 224p. PLB
