Each section covers the flora, fauna, and climate conditions specific to the biome, and includes applicable experiments and activities. The desert section, for example, is divided into hot and cold deserts. Two introductory pages distinguish between the types of deserts and explain how certain areas become arid. VanCleave discusses transpiration plus the adaptations and survival techniques for both hot and cold desert plants and animals. Experiments require simple materials and demonstrate concepts like how halophytic plants eliminate excess salt, how camels can walk across sand without sinking, and how surface area affects evaporation rates. The "Forests" section covers tropical rain, deciduous, and coniferous forests. "Grasslands" includes both temperate and tropical grasslands. And "Tundra" is divided into lowland and highland. World maps mark each biome's location (although the temperate grasslands map appeared incorrect in my copy of the book). New terms are in bold type and defined when first encountered.
