Sea Lions is an excellent book for early adolescent through adult students; however, younger children, too, will enjoy the pictures. The text begins by differentiating sea lions from seals and walruses. Beautiful, interesting photographs illustrating the characteristics of sea lions emphasize the differences between the three sea animals, such as their food sources, family living styles, care of the young, leisure activities, and ways to avoid enemies.The text discusses the physical and environmental influences on the life of sea lions. The location of the flippers, the amount of body fat, natural enemies, mating habits, and methods of obtaining food are explained clearly. The care of young sea lions is described well. The chapter titles define the focus of each chapter, which starts with a question and then provides evidence that is useful to the children as they seek the answer. The glossary and the index are appropriately brief.
This book should be read more than once. The first reading should concentrate on the excellent photographs; the second encourages additional interest and permits a greater understanding by relating the photographs to the text.
