Children's Literature
Using a variety of candies, pencils and other things familiar to children, this book introduces the concept of sorting into sets and subsets and shows examples from the real world, such as books in a library. A multicultural cast of children illustrates each point and a hands-on project explores a relevant math idea (piling everybody's shoes on the floor and thinking of ways to sort them). A pronunciation glossary of six words, a small selection of trade books related to sorting, Internet sources and an index round out this well-conceived entry in the "Exploring Math" series. 2001, Bridgestone Books, $17.26. Ages 5 to 8. Reviewer: Susan HeplerSchool Library Journal
K-Gr 1-These books introduce basic concepts and related terms, illustrated with full-page, full-color photographs. Each one is supplemented with a "Hands On" activity. In reality, they are overly simple and use rather cumbersome wording for explanations. Neither the plodding texts nor the amateurish, grainy photos make these books attractive enough to hold the attention of most children.-Nancy A.
