Children's Literature -
Like the other books in this "Extreme" series, this title features dynamic page design, vivid colors, and big, bright photographs of X-Games athletes engaged in thrilling, gravity-defying feats—all of which is sure to capture the attention of young action-lovers, even those who are also reluctant readers. The book gives a very brief history of the development of skiing sports and covers the basic equipment used by downhill skiers, but it focuses on the various skiing events featured in the winter X-Games, such as Superpipe, Big Air and Skiercross. The text itself is not particularly punchy or vibrant but it is clear and concise, with short paragraphs and plenty of white space so young readers will not be intimidated by long, unbroken blocks of type. This is an attractive, well produced series that is certain to be a popular choice in elementary school libraries. This series would also be a good choice for reading teachers working with older students—particularly boys—in remedial reading or ESOL classes. Back matter includes a glossary, an index, and suggestions for further research. Reviewer: Barbara Carroll RobertsBook Details
