Children's Literature - Karen Leggett

Extreme Snowboarding is extremely disjointed. Opening with a brief synopsis of the X Games, the book jumps to a description of snowboarding and equipment then back to chapters on different X Games events and a sampling of "unforgettable moments" from the games. Some of these moments will be understood only by those already in the know about snowboarding: "White won the gold with a flawless run that included three 1080s, or three full 360o rotations in the air, and one 900, two and a half 360o rotations in the air." The bright colors, exciting photographs and dreams of risk-filled excitement will appeal to reluctant readers who won't mind the crazy organization of the content. There is a glossary, a short quiz, online resources and a very short index; the series also includes titles on BMX, Moto X, skateboarding, skiing and surfing. Reviewer: Karen Leggett
