Children's Literature - Annie Laura Smith

Tough tractors have been in use for over 100 years. The word "tractor" comes from a Latin word that means to pull. These machines pull heavy objects in the farming and construction industries. Farmers use these tough machines to help plant and harvest their crops. Construction workers use tractors to pull heavy paving equipment. These tractors replaced people and animals, which historically pulled farm equipment. The "Contents" page shows the scope of the information about these enormous machines. The text and vivid photographs explain the characteristics and functions of these tough machines. These explanations include: what tough tractors are; the various kinds of tractors; their massive size; how they are used on the farm and in construction work; their fuel; how their engines work; and safety. The "Make Your Own Tractor" page provides a list of needed supplies and instructions for drawing a tractor in color. "Find Out More" lists websites for learning more about these enormous machines, including a website with historical information about yesterday's tractors. The "Glossary" defines machinery-related terms. An "Index" provides easy navigation through the text. Tough Tractors is part of the "World of Wonder Big Machine" series which includes: Extreme Excavators, Mighty Bulldozers, Dump Trucks, Jumbo Jets, and Monster Trucks. These big machines will engage young readers, especially boys. Reviewer: Annie Laura Smith
