Gr 2-4Complete and clear directions for putting on a play, from choosing parts and making props to setting the stage and assembling costumes, are supplied. Performers include a narrator and parts for three-to-five actors. While the elegant language of the folktale is sacrificed to colloquial readability, each story moves along quickly and predictably. Color photographs depicting a multicultural cast of children look posed but the youngsters seem to be having fun, even if self-consciously. Child-friendly features include speaking parts differentiated by a small icon and numbered directions for making hats, vests, skirts, and other essential props that can easily be created from common household items. Teachers would be assured of a stress-free production if they followed these templates even if this inviting series is aimed at children. They'll want to chuck that kiss that wakes Sleeping Beauty, though.Susan Hepler, Burgundy Farm Country Day School, Alexandria, VABook Details
