Children's Literature

Can you believe that a snake has a heart? Well, it does. Some snakes can even smell using their tongues. Their skulls and backbones are built much like other animals that walk. Some lay eggs and others have live babies. They can be fierce, and they can be helpful. There is much to be learned about this oft-feared animal, and segments of information can be found in this book. This is an informative and quick reference for any student who is studying these animals. The detail given is broader than it is deep, so it truly is an introductory resource. My students will love it, or at least the boys will. The book is part of the "First Reports" series. 2001, Compass Point Books, $21.26. Ages 10 up. Reviewer: Scott S. Floyd
