Young readers will start out with the basics of riding in an airplane, from going to the check-in counter, to getting a ticket and boarding pass, to finally entering the plane and taking off. From there, they will learn about the parts of the jet, the layout of the cockpit and the work of the pilot. Later chapters explore different types of planes, such as those with propellers, cargo planes, warplanes, seaplanes, crop dusters and ultralights. A glossary, index and Did You Know? section are included at the end. A Want to Know More? section offers additional books and helpful web sites, as well as contact information for the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Bold, full-color photographs accompany clearly presented, interesting and simple text. This is an excellent book in a series for beginning readers called "Transportation." Other titles in this series include Big Rigs, Freight Trains, and Race Cars. 2002, Compass Point Books, $19.93. Ages 4 to 9. Reviewer:Catherine Campbell Wright
