Children's Literature - Ginjer L. Clarke

This nonfiction book is a companion to the popular Canadian-produced children's TV program "This is Daniel Cook," which airs on Playhouse Disney. Daniel takes readers up in a small airplane and introduces them to the parts of the airplane, safety check, controls, and flying techniques, while retaining some of his spunk, curiosity, and precociousness. You can sense his excitement as he rides in the cockpit and inspects the control panel. Lots of photo illustrations, detailed text explaining the topic, and Daniel's questions (distinguished from text by a handwriting font and arrows) keep things lively. An activity shows kids how to make a paper airplane, which may be a bit simplistic for many readers. The small square size will make it easy for younger kids to hold on their own, and size and weight comparisons that a child can relate to are helpful. This would be a terrific read for a first-time flyer who is anxious, or it could accompany a field trip to an airfield or a lesson about flight. Additional discussion about the history of flight and the use of wind in flight with photos could be helpful for in-class use.

School Library Journal

K-Gr 3-Young readers will feel the excitement that Cook's TV show generates as each title opens with the phrase, "This is Daniel Cook," along with an introduction about the things that he likes to do. With hands raised, clad in his orange T-shirt, he takes readers on four typical outings. Chock-full of fun facts and amusing, colorful photographs, each book has an activity at the end. These titles are great preparations for field trips, making them excellent for school libraries.-Tracy Bell, Eastway Elementary School, Durham, NC Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
