Gr 3-6-A book that is similar to Bobbie Kalman's "Early America" series (Crabtree), but one that is easier to read and more concise. Each double-page chapter consists of a few short paragraphs of text, an information box, and a full-color illustration that often covers 3/4 of the spread. Quotes from pioneers' diaries and verses from songs add a personalized touch. Old-time remedies, games, and recipes are appended. The hardships, as well as the good times, are presented in an informative and entertaining manner.
