Children's Literature - Cathi I. White

Why do some kids have a hard time in school sitting still and paying attention? They want to do well, they want to listen to the teacher, and they want to learn. But they keep getting out of their seat, talking to others when they should be quiet, and not getting their work done. Teachers and parents may become upset with them and may not know what to do. The children get frustrated because they really are trying but they just cannot sit still and listen. Children like this may have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The author informs the reader that having ADHD makes the brain work faster but there are ways to get help. A doctor may prescribe medication to calm the child down. Parents may help by using charts to guide the child through his homework and chores. A teacher may make work easier, give the child time to talk to others and let him move around more. When these children get help, they feel better about themselves, and are better able to get their work done. Goldstein does an excellent job presenting the material in this educational book informing the young reader what it is like to have ADHD and what can be done to help. DeSisto's illustrations are colorful and realistic, keeping any young reader's attention. This informative book is highly recommended for younger children to help them get a greater understanding of how to cope with ADHD at home and at school. Reviewer: Cathi I. White
