Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich

This charming little seven and a half inch square book about affectionate mommies and drowsy baby animals illustrated in the sleepy colors of early evening is the perfect book choice when it is bedtime for a toddler. There are eight double-page spreads, each featuring a different baby animal getting ready for bed. The mommy elephant is giving her baby a bath. The lion mommy is watching her babies stretch and yawn. A little hippo's eyes are starting to close as he lies in a "warm, squishy swamp," and a new puppy inside a warm house is curled into a soft pillow. There are seven double-page spreads, each with a large flap to lift. On the next-to-the-last page a baby owlet with its eyelids half closed is sharing a nest with its wide-eyed mommy, but by the time the flap is raised the baby owl has closed his eyes and is fast asleep. The book comes to a close with, "Good night, someone, somewhere." This book will make any reader sleepy. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
