School Library Journal

ea. vol: 32p. diags. photogs. glossary. index. (Picture Library Series). Watts. Sept. 1985. PLB $9.40. Gr 2-4 How the shuttle gets into space, what the astronauts do while in orbit, how they prepare for re-entry and the landing of the space shuttle are the topics covered in a clear, concise, easy-to-read text. Friskey's Space Shuttles (Childrens, 1982) is easier to read, but Barrett's book provides more interesting and informative material. TV & Video explains, in simple language, how television programs are produced and sent over the air as well as some of the many uses of TV, including closed-circuit television and videotex. Some of the uses of video cassette recorders and how they work are briefly treated. Both books have one or two clearly labeled, full-color photographs or drawings per page. Some of the vocabulary may be difficult for the early age group. A glossary does define the terms but does not include a key to pronunciation. A brief history and a facts and records section at the end of each book supplies background information. Alice R. Arnett, Greenwood Elementary School, Louisville, Va.
