Children's Literature

Beginning with a discussion of the first prehistoric astronomers, this book then presents a basic introduction to space and space exploration. Starting with our own solar system and expanding to our galaxy and then to the universe, the text provides a broad discussion of celestial bodies and phenomena. Text is accompanied by NASA illustrations of stars and planets. The focus then switches to space exploration, with definitions of different types of telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope. A two-page section on the space shuttle will already seem outdated since it was written prior to the Columbia disaster of 2003. After outlining the types of work currently being done by astronomers and astronauts, the text turns to speculation on future directions for space exploration, from projects proposed for the international space station to potential manned missions to Mars. An index and glossary round out the volume. Part of the "21st Century Science" series. 2004, Smart Apple Media, Ages 9 to 12.
