Children's Literature

This sturdy, interactive book will serve as a great inspiration to those little people who are on the cusp of reading/writing. Having made paper plate games with letters on them, I greatly appreciate the efforts of the author and illustrator to create an attractive "machine" that is capable of "dialing up" thirty different words. The mechanism would be most useful all by itself but coupled with the appealing cartoon illustrations and the prompts from the text itself, this book is as fun as it is educational. Each spread features a familiar place such as a farm yard, a busy grocery store, a jungle scene with lots of animals, a living room, undersea creatures, and a park-like backyard. Readers are challenged to find specific things pictured in the top border, as well as to look for other things to identify in the pictures. Then they are asked to use the spelling machine to spell the five specific items on each page. Dialing the machine is easy and immediately satisfying, as the reader can check each answer by simply lifting a flap, where the word and its picture-gram appear if the word has been "dialed" correctly. Emergent readers will find this a great way to practice spelling and recognizing such words as: dog, cow, pig, frog, egg, banana, tiger, snake, door, cat, tree, etc. It is easy to imagine a four year old hunkered down with this one, thrilled by the success of "reading and spelling."
