Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Allen D. Seftel, MD(Case Western Reserve University)
Description:This book is devoted to sperm collection and to sperm processing. There are clinically relevant chapters.
Purpose:The purpose is to update the reader on the newer methods of sperm collection and processing. These objectives are best met in a broader text of male infertility. As isolated phenomena, they are marginally helpful. The book does meet the authors' objectives, however.
Audience:This book appears to be written for the beginner or someone with limited knowledge of the field. The more advanced individual in this area will probably not find this book helpful. Drs. Ross and Neiderberger are noted andrologists and add credibility to the book.
Features:The book highlights sperm procurement techniques, with beautiful operative photos. The clinical sections that deal with anejaculation, azoospermia, etc., are excellent. The sperm processing chapters are straightforward. There are limited references and no directions given to procuring the needed equipment for these techniques. CLIA issues are not discussed.
Assessment:This book is useful for those with an interest in the field of male factor infertility. It has limited potential beyond that. There are other books, such as standard urology or andrology texts, that may have more to offer. There are clinical atlases of male infertility that are comparable as far as pictures or operative techniques. A subsequent version would be warranted if it included CLIA issues, psychogenic issues that have to do with male factor infertility, responsibilities in starting and maintaining a sperm processing lab, medicolegal issues, technician certification, physician certification, and the like.
