Children's Literature - Ann Sanger

From the "Sports Starters" collection created by Bobbie Kalman, this book about figure skating would be a welcome addition in any second or third grade classroom. Students interested in skating would definitely take pleasure in the colorful pictures shown on nearly every page of the book. Colorful blue borders surround the photographs and contain a text box explaining each skill that is demonstrated. Several of the professional skaters pictured in the book would be familiar to most students who watch sports or follow the Olympics. The glossy cover with full color photo will attract many students browsing the library shelves. This thirty-two page paperback has a Contents page containing chapters on topics such as keeping score, the spin zone, and the competitive scene. Students will get a short tour of the sport of figure skating. The text is simple reading with a large font. A Glossary and Index is included in the back of the book to clarify skating terms and aid the students in doing research on the subject of figure skating. Maybe some students would be inspired to take up the sport. Reviewer: Ann Sanger
