Gambling. Recruiting. Performance-enhancing drugs. Alcohol and drug abuse. Racism. Sex. Cheating to win. Out-of-control fans. Sudden death and serious injuries. The newspapers are filled with sports scandals concerning these subjects. It seems ironic that sportsmanship should be held up as a paramount virtue in American society, and yet scandal continually tarnishes our professional sports.Editorials

Gr 7 Up-Filled with information culled largely from Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News, and USA Today, Nuwer focuses on myriad demons that plague professional and amateur sports (and our larger society today). Although dealing with high-interest material- gambling, drug and steroid use, cheating, illegal recruitment practices, sex scandals, and AIDS-the author's dry style detracts from the book's potential appeal. Grainy black-and-white photographs add little to the presentation. Perhaps most interesting is the chapter on racism, which gives a historical perspective and clearly shows that despite much progress, the problem is still a distinct concern. Nathan Aaseng's The Locker Room Mirror (Walker, 1993) is a far better choice. In addition, there are several books dealing with specific problems such as Janet Mohun's Drugs, Steroids and Sports (Watts, 1988).-Renee Steinberg, Fieldstone Middle School, Montvale, NJBook Details
