Books in this "To the Young..." series have identical handsome formats with a number of black-and-white photographs and clear, interesting writing. Each chapter features an adult happily working in his or her field. A few biographical details are given, but the emphasis is on the subject's career: the initial attraction, first jobs, and the rise to success. Lengthy quotes from the interviewees offer information on their careers and advice for a young person wishing to enter the field. The interviewees include women, people of color, and non-U.S.-born men. A boxed inset gives each subject's career highlights and "words of wisdom." The writer's book includes screenwriter Angelo Pizzo, who wrote the screenplays for Hoosiers and Rudy; novelist Phyllis Reynolds Naylor; a poet; an ad copywriter; a music and film critic; and a sportswriter. Photos include pictures of the writers, scenes from movies and sporting events, and teenagers engaged in some aspect of writing. Interviews with a technical writer would have been a good addition, but this book is excellent as it stands, providing valuable information for would-be writers. Other titles in the series are To the Young Filmmaker, To the Young Environmentalist and To the Young Scientist. Glossary. Index. Photos. Further Reading.
