The Welcome Books are a collection of nonfiction series designed for new or emergent readers. The "Weather Report" series briefly discusses activities that kids might undertake given the weather conditions. There is a very brief eXplanation of the weather phenomenon. On a sunny day, the sun shines brightly and it is perfect for outdoor activities. We see plenty of her and her activities but little of the weather in question. Also, the fact that there are sunny days in winter seems to be an afterthought. Fullpage, fullcolor photographs appear on the right hand page with a simple two or three sentence teXt on the left. Bolded words are defined in a section entitled "New Words," and it should be noted that the definitions are specific to the teXt. There is a page that lists books and web sites to help kids find out more (note that no dates are given for the books cited). There is an indeX and a brief mention of the author and the consultants on the final page, and there is an opening table of contents page. 2000, Grolier, $13.50 and $4.95. Ages 4 to 7. PreS-Gr 1-Small, slim concept books illustrated with close-up color photographs. Both of the easy-to-read, large-print texts are narrated by a child who describes what she will do and wear on a sunny or cloudy day. In Cloudy, the weather has ruined a chance for a day at the beach. At the playground, the narrator can hardly see her shadow. The story ends as the clouds begin to break up, portending "a nice day after all." Unfortunately, there is no mention of clouds being related to possible precipitation. In addition, the photos appear staged. After showing sunblock, the zoo, and swimming in a pool, Sunny ends on a bright winter day, which expands on the usual hot/sunny day concept. Fair to partly cloudy selections for beginning readers.-Sharon R. Pearce, Geronimo Public School, OK Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
