Children's Literature - Amie Rose Rotruck

Shelter is a basic human need. In today's world, homes for humans range from simple huts to elaborately constructed mansions. The problem of shelter is twofold: creating low-cost, efficient housing for underprivileged people and making all homes environmentally sound. Many organizations are dedicated to providing safe, environmentally friendly houses in third-world countries. These homes also make use of easily available energy sources, such as biomass fuels. Wealthier nations are instituting building standards that waste less material and make use of more efficient energy sources such as solar power. Water use is also a concern, as toilets, dishwashers, and washing machines use quite a bit of water. Water-saving versions of these appliances can make quite an impact on the water shortage. Outside the home, organic gardens and a good transportation system can help create an environmentally friendly and enjoyable community. Ewan McLeish explains some complex issues about housing in a very straightforward manner, complete with photographs and glossary. A very good resource for energy, environmental, or cultural studies. Part of the "Sustainable Futures" series.
