Gr 6-9American Frontier focuses on the westward expansion and issues such as manifest destiny and settlers' treatment of Native Americans. Primary-source quotes allow those who might disagree with modern interpretations to speak for themselves, and readers to reach their own conclusions. When it comes to Egypt, there is a wealth of glossy picture books available that are heavy on mummies and pyramids but short on basic history. For readers who are ready to study the subject in depth, Smith's title is just the thing. Both books feature clear, concise, informative text and unremarkable black-and-white reproductions and photographs. The last chapters of each, which explain the significance of the time period or culture, are unusual for this level and very well done. Quotes from primary and secondary sources, timelines, footnotes, and annotated bibliographies make these volumes excellent introductions not only to their topics, but also to the study of history itself.Connie Parker, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Cleveland, OHBook Details
