Gr 6-9-- Series biographies in which the authors have done an admirable job of showing ``The Importance of'' their subjects. The books are notable for many reasons, not the least of which are the frequent quotations from a wide variety of primary and secondary sources. In all of the titles, pertinent quotations taken from diaries, tapes, or letters are included, and many are set off by attractive borders. All quotes are footnoted and there is no fictionalized dialogue. The volumes are divided into chapters with catchy titles, and then subdivided into sections with headings in bold print. Barr is objective in presenting Nixon and the Watergate scandal from every possible viewpoint, but ultimately condemns the president's plotting and scheming. One disappointing slip in clarity occurs in a caption that states ``Senator Joe McCarthy almost halted government operations by recklessly accusing government officials of communism.'' There is a hazy quality to some of the photos, but most other illustrative material is of a high quality and appropriately chosen. Stewart includes some diagrams and other reproductions seldom seen in other Franklin bios. Warburton treats Chief Joseph with fairness and even sympathy, while suggesting that U. S. soldiers and government officials often were ignorant of Indian ways. Welcome additions to middle school libraries. --Phyllis Graves, Creekwood Middle School, Kingwood, TX
