Overview

In a dark, brutal new age, humans have crossed vast stretches of space and incorporated new levels of technology into their very beings. Yet they still struggle with the bloody instincts that have tormented humanity since time immemorial. ThreeSys is a triangle of stars with eleven planets each, where people are divided into three classes-Meshed, Jacked, and Jackless-a caste system of technological access. "Mesh" has emerged as the universe's single greatest power: a tiny elite of Meshed humans can access unsurpassed knowledge, enter another dimension, and manipulate lesser mortals' reality.

But three of these gifted humans-Eve, Corey, and Annmarie-have harnessed this power for their own evil ends. Traveling throughout ThreeSys, the trio devotes their extraordinary abilities to selling what they claim is an end to all wars and aggression. What they're actually selling is Staze, an opiumlike, instantly addictive drug that wraps the user in dreams and lethargy. Yet some Jacked and Jackless have retaliated against this and other abuses of power, mercilessly hunting down and killing Meshed humans.

Time is running out for the three, even as ebony-hued Eve falls in love with lower caste Naverdi, who's Jacked, a supplier of a key Staze ingredient, and an addict herself. The only answer is on Paradise, the first ThreeSys planet where humans ever set foot. Paradise hadn't survived its first brush with human habitation, and was blasted from its orbit into another solar system millennia ago. Now it's the only place where the Mesh is intact-the old Mesh, the original Mesh, the real one.

The Annunciate-the first person to step off the first ship-still lives in Paradise's mythsand legends.

All Meshed wear the Annunciate's medal, her mysterious, enigmatic image etched at the gates of Paradise, offering the elusive promise of a new world clean of sin and violence. But a far more dangerous presence awaits Eve, Naverdi, Annmarie and Corey on the abando

In the far future, humanity has spread throughout the galaxy and fragmented into three distinct factions--the Meshed, the Jacked, and the Jackless--according to their ability to access virtual technology. Hunted to near-extinction by the other two factions, the Meshed maintain a precarious existence until a strange, alien being encounters a trio of Meshed fugitives and announces itself as their salvation. The author of Speaking Dreams depicts a grim future where fear of "the other" takes precedence over trust and good faith. Marred only by the lack of appealing characters, this novel of ideas belongs in large sf collections. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

Far-future virtual-reality/alien-contact yarn from the author of Hand of Prophesy (1998). In Park's 3-sun, 33-planet ThreeSys, those "Meshed" (connected through internal and external nanomachine "propagants") have access to an augmented sensory/information Net. The Jacked have merely a standard plug-in computer/machine interface. The Jackless have nothing. To restrain ThreeSys's endemic violence and warfare, the Meshed introduced an addictive, pacifying drug called Staze. The non-Meshed retaliated with computer viruses that wiped out all the Meshed save Eve, Annmarie, and Corey. Only these three know how to make Staze, but will they choose to bring a drug-induced peace, or seize control of everything? What remains of the Mesh is failing, and only on planet Paradiseβ€”the first planet to be colonized, subsequently blasted by warβ€”do old-type, virus-immune propagants survive. Eve, the junior partner, constantly betrayed by Corey or manipulated by Annmarie, wants only her Jacked, Staze-addicted lover, Naverdi. But the Paradise propagants soon take over their ship's systems and combine with worms and moss on the planet to produce a "succubus," an ignorant but powerful construct. The succubus grabs Naverdi and impregnates her with the Unknown Child, meanwhile linking Meshed and Jacked with all ThreeSys's Staze addicts through their dreams. Will this, as the addicts believe, deliver enlightened peace? Or, as Eve suspects, is the succubus a voracious alien predator? A passionate, ferocious, incoherent swirl of sex, treachery, religion, drugs, technology, and transcendence. What it all adds up to is anybody's guess.
