Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer

Basic information about Ancient Rome is presented in an accessible format for young readers. The pages are filled with colorful illustrations, including maps and carefully labeled diagrams. The brief text generally offers one short paragraph for each topic. The formation of early Rome and the development of its government, including the creation of the Senate, are presented in the first pages. The role of the Roman soldiers in conquering neighboring lands and the building of the Roman Empire depict the importance of this civilization. Daily life for the soldiers, the rulers, the slaves and the common people is described. Gladiators fighting wild beasts are featured as a part of the section about sports and leisure. The fall of the empire and its legacy are highlighted. The role of archeologists in uncovering the history of these people is illustrated with the excavation of Pompeii. There is a glossary and an index. This is a good introduction to Ancient Rome. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
