School Library Journal

K-Gr 2-Written for level-one readers, these books introduce two significant events in American history. Simple sentences written in straightforward language face full-page, full-color illustrations with captions that further explain the scenarios. Words in boldface type include names of famous people associated with the event and appear in a comprehensive word list. The quality of the pictures is not consistent. The events in Boston Tea Party are depicted with realistic, attractive art, whereas the illustrations in Declaration are poorly executed. Students may ask why Thomas Jefferson is pictured standing at his writing table rather than sitting if he wrote for 18 days. Tea Party is an additional purchase; skip Declaration.-Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NE Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
