Overview

Of northern European nations, the British had the greatest impact on the Americas. Their history there embraces far more than the colonies that became the United States: England entered the New World a century before those colonies were established, and the British presence outlived their loss. This book is a concise history of that involvement. It spans three centuries, from the earliest contacts to the disintegration of the British and the other Euro-American empires in the early 1800s; and its covers the entire arc of British territories from Canada to the Caribbean. In offering an introduction to the social, economic and political history of all the major Anglo-American colonial regions, Anthony McFarlane exposes the full diversity of the British American world. He highlights the differences, resemblances and interactions of the white settler and slave societies which emerged under British rule. Today, the history of European colonialism in the Americas is increasingly divided into discrete specialisms which rarely interact. Anthony McFarlane's wide-ranging account will thus be especially welcome. In integrating the many histories which make up the history of the Anglo-American world he provides new perspectives and comparisons within it; but he also relates the British colonial experience to the larger process of European expansion and decline in the Americas. Many parallels are drawn with the other European colonial empires in the New World, particularly the Spanish. His book will be necessary reading for anyone interested in the comparative history of European imperialism in the Americas during the preindustrial age.
