Gr 6 UpA well-written, well-organized overview of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, 1619-1995. Primary- and secondary-source quotes, elucidating text-filled sidebars, and archival black-and-white photographs extend and enhance the smoothly flowing prose. Only the highlights of the struggle can be included in such a concise work, but Dunn deftly brings to life all of the drama and personalities involved. The account of the desegregation of the public school system in Little Rock, AR, is particularly moving and a vivid portrait of Martin Luther King, Jr., emerges from the printed page. The text is augmented with a helpful time line, a useful index, and a lengthy bibliography. This title could serve as a companion volume to the McKissacks' The Civil Rights Movement in America (Children's Press, 1991) and William Dudley's The Civil Rights Movement (Greenhaven, 1995).David A.
