Overview
Tidcombe has written previously for the British Library about T. J. Cobden-Sandeson and the Doves Bindery. Here she offers a treatment of the Doves Press, founded by Cobden-Sanderson in 1900. Characterizing it as one of the three great English private presses, she says that its first book, published a few days after the death of Queen Victoria, marked the end of that age and set the standard for printing in the 20th century. She looks at Codden-Sanderson's idea and ideal in reaction to the recently closed Kelmscott Press, the history of the company and operation, his Pro Iracundia Sua Apologia, and books and papers printed at the Doves Press.
