Overview

Victorian publisher William Tinsley, though famous for his association with circulating libraries, the three-decker novel, and many high-profile novelists of the day, nevertheless remains an enigmatic figure. He was regarded by many of his authors as sharp and unpleasant, but by others-including some of his fellow publishers-as an honorable businessman. In this new study, Peter Newbolt offers a description of Tinsley's childhood, then explores his first experiences in the London book trade. He traces the publisher's career, principally through his contact with such authors, including Sala, Henty, Hardy and Yates; there are also chapters on the firm's staff and Tinsleys' Magazine. Here for the first time, in an appendix to the study, Newbolt presents a painstakingly compiled checklist of books published by the Tinsley brothers Contents: List of Illustrations; Prelude; Overture; South Mimms; Leaving home: Notting Hill; The Brough brothers; Business partnership: marriage partnerships; The circulating libraries & the three-volume novel; Sala sets the ball rolling; Mary Elizabeth Braddon; George Lawrence, and Ouida; Mrs Henry Wood, and Mrs J.H. Synopsis

English publisher William Tinsley has been called a "speculative publisher" because of the way he took chances on unknown novelists, paying them in advance for their novels in the hopes of making a profit later. Drawing upon Tinsley's memoirs, Newbolt discusses the path of his career, his literary aesthetic, and his relationships with authors such as Thomas Hardy and Mary Elizabeth Braddon. The volume includes a list of books published by Tinsley Brothers between 1854 and 1888.
