Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Alan Micco, M.D.(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This textbook on all aspects of otology is edited by two very well recognized figures in the specialty of otology.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a comprehensive and updated review of all aspects of otology,
Audience: This text is intended to be an update for otolaryngologic/otologic practitioners, and a basic otologic text for otolaryngology residents and fellows.
Features: This is a thorough review of otology. All the basic sciences are covered, including histology, anatomy and physiology, and audiometric/vestibular assessment, as well as all clinical aspects of otology. There is a fair amount of neurotology covered as well. Each chapter has an outline at the beginning and highlighted summary points at the end. After each section there is a portion dedicated to rehabilitation. Audiological rehabilitation is covered in a separate section. This book is not intended to be a surgical atlas; while procedures are discussed, step-by-step descriptions are not given.
Assessment: This is an outstanding textbook with the most up-to-date information available. There are only a few otologic texts books available, and this ranks among the best. It is authored by many renowned physicians and is definitely a great addition to the field.
