Synopsis
Using examples from the European biotechnology industry, this volume investigates the way economic processes influence the development and application of new knowledge. McKelvey (economics of innovation), Rickne (industrial dynamics), and Laage-Hellman (industrial marketing), all from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, chose a broad definition of modern biotechnology to encourage exploration of the relation of biotechnology to different fields. Consequently, the topics considered range from the life science industry in the post-genome era and the response of the insurance industry to predictive genetic testing to regional specialization and the spatial dimension of firm formation.
