A triathlete, nutritionist and author of several fitness books, Edwards takes a simple, commonsensical approach to weight control: expend the same number of calories that you consume, and your weight will remain the same; expend more, lose weight; expend fewer, gain weight. Although not seminal, the information is comprehensive and up to date: eat dark-red carrots for beta-carotene, believed to protect against cancer; be cautious of saturated vegetable fats that can raise cholesterol levels. Edwards is not out to make marathoners of her readers but to help them burn more calories in enjoyable, practical ways. Her meal and exercise plans, self-image evaluation questionnaire and a clever carry-along ``Slide Guide'' (for quick appraisal of the input/output balance) all work together to inspire and motivate.
