School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-A competent overview that features excellent maps and good diagrams. Rawlins includes many statistics and much historical information. She describes water erosion of land, how canyons are made, the Colorado River, Glen Canyon Dam, geologic eras, Native Americans, wildlife, the ecosystem balance, National Park policy, and the efforts of conservation groups. Unfortunately, the book is illustrated largely with blurry or dull black-and-white and full-color reproductions of National Park Service photos. Patrick Cone's Grand Canyon (Carolrhoda, 1994) has much better photography and more lively writing. However, Rawlins's text will make an acceptable additional source for reports. For the most complete information, order Lynne Foster's Exploring the Grand Canyon (Grand Canyon Natural Assoc., 1990).-Susannah Price, Boise Public Library, ID
