Children's Literature
This book is part of the "Life During the Great Civilizations" series devoted to describing the people and experiences of various empires. It contains several decent maps and numerous images of beautiful artwork from scrolls to sculptures. The text is very thorough and informative with sections on a multitude of topics ranging from religion, the household, social structure, silk, and the marketplace. There is a substantial section devoted to scientific innovations, such as the seismograph and architectural achievements such as the Great Wall. The text is straightforward with a glossary at the end. There are engaging photographs and colorful pictures on practically every page. All new words are italicized. This book is both visually stimulating and educational; a good choice for a child seeking an introduction to the Han Dynasty. 2004, Blackbirch Press/The Gale Group, Ages 8 to 10.βRihoko Ueno
