School Library Journal

Gr 6-10-- An excellent overview. Stewart's detailed account is fair and balanced, carefully representing the points of view of all the major participants. She does an admirable job of sketching the background and clearly presents the complicated political and military alliances that existed and those that evolved. The focus, however, is the role of the U. S. in the war effort and the effects of its participation on the home front. The draft, rationing, and the roles of women and minorities both in the military and in war industries are discussed. High quality black-and-white archival photographs are abundant and informative. A few maps of the Western front are also included. A good choice for libraries needing more information about World War I. --David N. Pauli, Missoula Pub . Lib . , MT
